Repainting an Old Cabinet

01/25/2013 by Pattie 3 Comments

I bought this big black cabinet at an R. C. Willey parking lot sale for I think $90.00.

I forgot to take a before picture. But this is kind of at the halfway painted stage. It was part of a mismatched set that would go around a big screen TV.

It had been sitting in the basement in a corner for about 6 years with nothing in it. It just took up space.

Here is the repainted old cabinet filled with some servingware….that’s still a work in progress….

But now since remodeling the great room, and buying this new dining table from another scratch and dent store, and buying new dusty blue linen chairs with nailhead trim online from Overstock.com, I was thinking about using it for holding some of my crystal and china sets. I just had to find the right color of paint.

Here is the new table and chairs…..it will fit our whole family! (Thanksgiving Table Decor)
And here it is with Christmas Table Decor- you can see the light whitewashed look of the wood. It
is a really pretty piece. I love how it looks like rough lumber. John calls it “the Pirate table”. hehe….

I sprayed some primer on it first since it was going from black to pale blue…

Then we went over to Home Depot and picked a dusty aqua colored satin paint from the Glidden collection (our favorite paint) and Johnny helped me paint it.

We started by taping off the glass areas….
And then we put 2 coats of paint on it…..The thing is massive so when we tried to lay it down we busted off a leg and
so then John had to replace a long screw in the leg and patch it up. What a bother it was! But now it is all done.
This is what we used to have in that corner….(this picture was taken during mid painting  of the walls)….it was an old corner shelf. We repurposed the corner shelf in the kitchen to use as a cookbook shelf!
Here is the old oak corner shelf. It looks a lot better in the kitchen next to the table…..and it is a great place to house
all of my 40+ cookbooks in one central place! I added some ceramics and some vinegars and knick knacks to it. 😀
Then we added a cute ceramic and silver knob from Hobby Lobby to the cabinet (on sale for $2.00) and wha-la! it looks a whole heck of a lot better than the black lump in the corner of the basement.

I am almost done with this room. I got new curtains too.

Here’s the ceramic knob I got from Hobby Lobby. It adds a little somethin….
Here it is in the background filled with Snowmen at Christmas time…..dontcha love my son
Jeff in his hunting disguise? snicker….
I like it! I may do a brown glaze over this brightish blue to tone it down a bit.
I added a few sets of china and some sparkly things. What do you think?

Winter Yard Decor

01/20/2013 by moss Leave a Comment

My boring front entry looks like it needs a face lift. It is snowy January in Utah and all my flower beds aren’t looking very inspirational. But maybe I can spruce up my front entry with some clever winter creations!!

This VERY creative birdbath has a frozen fruity design I had never seen anything like it! Check it out HERE.

Simple Christmas Decor
My favorite color is red, so I am attracted to all red decor. This has some winter amaryllis bulbs and some red pomegranates hanging. I love the red rainboots and the tin watering can on the door for winter yard decor. Check this one out on Pinterest.

I loved this winter front porch too! All they did is add some red berry picks and ribbon and some white twigs and it looks really beautiful…..and there again is the cute sled.  I have GOT to get one of those!! Check it out Busy Bee Lifestyle’s great outdoor decor ideas.
Outdoor decor
Hanging snowflakes are really fun and easy for winter decorations in the yard, aren’t they? These sets on string would be a lot of fun waving in the snowy wind.
midwest living
Another winter porch with red accents and pine cones for Winter Porch Decor. I think the red sticks would be an easy addition too.
ninnarae-winter-front-porch-display
I LOVED this idea with the ice skates. And I have a cute little sled similar to this. I’ll have to see if I can pick up some ice skates at the thrift store. The little “Let it Snow” board adds a cute winter greeting too doesn’t it?  This one is from HGTV.

So I think I’ll add some red berries and white sticks to my little green evergreen potted tree. Then I’ll find some old ice skates, and I’ll add a red sled with a bucket of pine cones to my front entry.

Winter Dance Recital 2012

12/31/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

Megan and Marisa had their dance recital last week. I had to post some of the
cutest pictures I got.
Here they are up on stage doing their ballet number….to the tune of……I want a Hippopotamus
for Christmas….Meg loves to sing it around the house….

I made them pose around the tree before we left the house. They both have glitter in their hair and
 make-up on. They loved it!

They are both in the same dance class this year.

Just about to start dancing….no stage fright here!

Cutie pies….

Here they are in their tap dancing outfits….they take ballet and tap…..
cute little hair fancies….

I loved it. They are 2 cute little ballerinas!

Christmas Parties 2012

12/29/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

Christmas morning was fun seeing the little faces of my granddaughters as they opened gifts they liked.

Even my 30 year old seemed to like something he got. That is rare for me to get something right. lol.

Darling Josie girl…so cute!
I had to show some of my cute kitchen and dining room decorations……
This was the little kids’ table and I had just bought some new Snowmen plates and cups from Shopko.

this was one of my favorites….my little Pottery Barn Christmas Tree on the wall. Each pocket is for a little candy. Sweet!
I got this $70.00 Pottery Barn tree for only $17.00 because it says Merry Christmas in  Portuguese . Who cares?  I love it anyway!
Not as sweet as this little girl though…..she was cute in her little red shoes.
Part of my Nutcracker collection…..
The girls and me posing right before all the chaos begins….

Wendy, Josie and Jeff’s Christmas picture….
Formal Dining Room decor….
Living room desk decor….

Entry table decorations….
Grandpa playing Santa at the Family party…Mrs. Claus in back….
Thanks for a fun party guys!

We always act out the Nativity…here are my grandkids playing shepherds…with cute little stuffed lambs….

Singing as a group as the Nativity scenes are acted out….

These kids are both in their twenties….but they are good sports playing Joseph and Mary anyway….

My son and his cute daughter… I loved this little red sweater…..

I made a chocolate bundt cake for the party and here it was. Too bad the sides got smashed a little on the drive up. Check out the recipe HERE at my other blog Weekday Chef.

My cute daughter and her hubs. He is the eye doctor at Lenscrafters in Southtowne Mall if you need your eyes checked. He’s a very nice guy. I love buying him presents for Christmas because he is so appreciative and gets excited. That’s rare in peeps over 30.
My brother in law, his son and my hubs on the right….The 3 Kings hahaha…..
Some YUMMY Chex Munch made by my sister-in-law. Her blog recipe can be found  at Sugar-n-Spice Gals.
It was a lot of Christmas fun this year.  Now I just have to get some energy to take everything down again!! EEK!
Happy New Year everybody!

I’m am FINALLY all done wrapping presents! WaHOOOOOO! I hated just having the gifts all sitting there and now I’m soooooo glad it’s all done. Thanks to the hubs we cranked it all out in an evening.

You know how you have to set all the piles around to be sure it is kind of fair? Well, those piles sat around like that for a week. But I was babysitting Saturday so I had to get it all done Friday night!

Whew, I wonder what this will be like if our family gets any bigger! EEK!

I came across a few ideas that I liked for keeping it all in a theme.  How about using thread for ribbon and attaching adornments? How cute is that? They just used plain colored papers too. Sometimes that is the most striking! Black and red paper!

From Design Sponge HERE.
This cute wrapping idea is from Older and Wiser blogspot.  LOVE IT!
My daughter-in-law stamped everybody’s name on their gifts and then added an
ornament for embellishment….these are just wrapped in brown paper!  Cute!

Labels from My Sweet Prints
This is a cute idea for package labels I found and you can download and print them off free!

I love this idea using some old music paper and gold ribbon with jingle bells! I have TONS of old music books….maybe next year I’ll do a music paper theme with different colors of ribbons….
Cute Kid Wraps from Martha Stewart.

Anyone who is a teacher will love this gift wrapping idea.  I love the hand printed capital letters on paper with different colors of marker. Kids would LOVE to decorate paper with their own printing. Great Idea!

mishmashmake.com and Christmas Labels by Paperjack, Etsy

I’ve always loved Red and White. My wedding
colors were red and white. You can’t go wrong here
using just dots and checks with different
 kinds of ribbons…..

Doilies on brown or red paper is cute too!  From Knicky Knack

Here are my boring packages. I got coordinating paper from Costco and wrapped everything up
in one of these 3 styles of paper adding embellishments to a few.

Just red and white and green foil papers with candy cane embellishments….

Easy and cute I say….Love love love Costco!

 Happy Wrapping!

Santa Handprint Cards and Letters to Santa

12/16/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

We wrote letters to Santa. And we made Santa Handprints.

The 2nd graders had lots of questions for Santa in their Santa Letters….HERE  is some cute writing paper from Activity Village to use for Letters to Santa. .

We have all been trying to be “pretty good this year”……

We painted palms pink, fingers white, and top of our hands with red paint to do a handprint  Santa.
Santa is awesome……yes he is!
Then we added some glitter glue to our Santa Hand prints….
We had some replies already to our letters! The school secretary raced into our classroom with the freezing cold envelope we’d sent to the North Pole!!!  It was marked “return to sender”. And guess who had written us back?

Each of the kids got a reply to their letters to Santa!!  Santa’s elves made time to write personal letters to each of the students. Super cool Santa!!

So I hope everybody gets what they wanted for Christmas!!

Lots of electronics on the gift list this Christmas!

Hope you get everything you wanted from Santa Claus too!

Beautiful Flower Gardens

12/10/2012 by moss Leave a Comment

I miss the summer where I had lots of beautiful blooms.

Now it’s getting cold and the snow is coming.

I will be missing the beds of flowers and the pops of color for awhile.

And the fruits of the season. They will have to wait awhile.

But now that fall has passed, we can look back on all the beautiful things we loved. the hubs included…lol...

And the fun adventures we experienced.

And enjoy new ones as we head into winter. And enjoy a new kind of beauty.

But we will miss the flowers of summer.

Oh yes we will. Thank goodness we took lots of pictures while things were abloom!

Polar Express in Linden Utah

12/09/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

The Stringtown Polar Express is in Lindon, Utah. We rode the train last Thursday. It was a fun family event.
Here we are riding the Polar Express…super fun time.

Uncle Dennis acts as the conductor sometimes. We had him as our conductor last time we rode the train. But this time was his night off.

But he signed us up anyway. He’s a good uncle and a very nice man.  He is my hub’s brother.
Here are my kids and I riding. Jeff is on his phone checking messages lol… those kids and their phones. I just don’t get it. My phone is always dead for that very reason. Talk to people in the HERE AND NOW! Live your life!
My darling little Megan….she had a fun visit at Santa’s workshop. They stop halfway through the train ride and you get to go in and visit and get a candy cane.
Marisa and Santa Claus. The workshop is really decorated up cute.
And there is a giant train that drives around inside Santa’s workshop. The girls were mesmerized by it.
Mrs. Claus is there too. She and the elves pass out the little necklaces with a  jingle bell. Then we sing a few
Christmas carols together.
Here the girls are getting their little necklaces and a candy cane from Santa.
Shakin the bells to the song Jingle Bells….so sweet!  I so appreciate the Linden  community for doing this excellent Christmas service to us all. It is a wonderful and fun, free activity. You can sign up to go HERE at the Stringtown USA website.  They have a sign up and directions.
We saw some beautiful scenery depicting the Christmas story as we rode around the 4 acre or so property.
Many of the scenes were of Santa but some were of Christ, the manger scene (which turned out too blurry to show…) and others about the Life of Christ.
Here we are almost to Santa’s Workshop. This is one of the cute blow ups they have all over as well as music piped into your train car (Celene Dion and Josh Grobin) and colored light displays all over.

Then as you leave there are tables set up to send a message to a missionary around the world serving  by teaching people the gospel.  Or a place for the little kids to jump on a giant trampoline.  The little girls chose the tramp.

Jeff and Josie jumping together. She wanted to do it herself. She’s getting so big now! Look at that cute frown!  lol
I didn’t get a good one of Josie with Santa tho. …..bummer……She is still a little wary of him at age 2.
Tiff and the girls.
Our whole family waiting to check in….they show the Tom Hanks version of the animated movie Polar Express in a giant garage screening room. It was great! Christmas trees decorated the front of the room with colored lights all over.
It is a really fun time. Thanks again Stringtown USA. You rock!

Thanksgiving Decorations

11/28/2012 by moss Leave a Comment

There are leaves all over my front yard and the wind is howling and it is raining. So I’m safe and warm inside wondering if good old Mr. Wind will blow all my leaves away today so I won’t have to be the raking maniac on Saturday.

I’m sitting here looking through cookbooks trying to decide what to do for a pumpkin dessert for Thanksgiving. Maybe a pumpkin trifle? Maybe a pumpkin cake in a jelly roll pan with cream cheese icing? Maybe a pumpkin cheesecake?

Well, in the meantime, here are my cute Thanksgiving day decorations….2012….

Thanksgiving Day was super fun at the Moss Homestead this year. The whole family was home.

I decorated every single room up for Thanksgiving; end tables, coffee tables, entryway, kitchen….every surface I could find had stuff! Yeah, it’s an illness I think. I go overboard a little bit.

The kitchen counters had all kinds of turkeys and pumpkins everywhere……

Real fall pumpkins as well as glass ones. It was really cute!

Merlene and Don Moss came for dinner on the Sunday before Thanksgiving….

Grandpa Don passed out his life history he’d been working on for 12 years! It was awesome!

Cute Tiff and Gary….

Family Picture for Thanksgiving Day 2012…..

Want to see some cute decorations? Well I have plenty. Here is my entryway table decorated for Thanksgiving……

The kitchen buffet was decorated with Thanksgiving pilgrims…..

And Indians….and Look! I even made a little fall subway lettering in a picture frame!

More pilgrims…..the little girls love my tiny set of pilgrims and Indians at a tiny table. The legs are broken off of two of them now, but we still set them out.

Devin and Caitlin came from Chicago and stayed 8 days! It was wonderful to have them here. We threw a baby shower of Caitlin one night last week and she got a lot of fun loot!
We played pin the hat on the turkey….the girls and Devin loved it! (Devin is just a big kid, didn’t you know?)
Caitlin and Devin made gingerbread cookies for us to decorate. This is Devin’s “anatomically correct” gingerbread girl….lol……
Sadly, it melted in the oven and we couldn’t figure out which girl had the…..well….the….well endowed body…..hehe…..
Entry table in the great room was so cute! This candy was all gone about 10 minutes after all the kids arrived……and I think I had 5 bowls everywhere……what the heck?
Thanksgiving table decorations……
Marisa was all ready to eat at the kiddie table….I got 2 little pilgrim bears and a soft turkey for them to take home with them……all of them loved the turkey. Megan got to take it home…..

One of the end tables in the great room……I love fall decor!
The piano was decorated for fall too…..Happy Thanksgiving!
Here’s our buffet table with all the vittles in the kitchen…..

We had lots of good stuff too!  I always forget to take a picture of the turkey though….sniff sniff….

The kiddie table with all 3 girls chowing down…..

Don’t you love Megan sticking her tongue out? That’s just special…..lol….
Coffee table decor……
End table in the living room……
Desk decorated for Thanksgiving in the living room…
We all made some fun pilgrim hat cookies with Keebler striped shortbread cookies, some icing, some small peanut butter cups and a slice of gumdrop for the buckle. These were to DIE FOR good!
And I ate a bunch of them…bad me…..
These turned out cute and yummy….Pilgrim Hat Cookies…..Made from Reeses Peanut Butter Cups and Keebler shortbread striped cookies!
Then it was the ipad games all around…..and phone games…..
All 4 of these kids love ipad games! Even the 2 year old Josie is great on the ipad!
Then we played Apples to Apples in the great room…..John doesn’t like games so he plays for 5 minutes and then sneaks off to watch football in the basement…..here he is about to make his getaway…..
The little girls and Devin, Cait, Wendy and I decorated
 gingerbread houses and cookies…
I think this one was Marisa’s house…it was super pretty!
This one was Josie’s house….very cute!
Jeffrey always wins the games we play. He got 7 on Apples to Apples and I only got 1. How did that happen? It was a fun Thanksgiving Day hanging out together.  I will miss everybody. It’s so great to be together.
