Giant Pumpkins and Pumpkin Patches

08/25/2012 by moss Leave a Comment

We watched one of those shows on giant pumpkins festivals in upstate New York. It was fun to see all the gardeners babysitting their pumpkins. I wish I would have planted some in May. They’d be big by now.  Here’s some tips for growing giant pumpkins for yourself HERE.

Giant Pumpkins are a fun thing to grow!

But, alas, we were doing lillies and fruit trees and veggies. Next year I’m going to find a place to do a pumpkin patch. There is one area behind my house that has nothing growing. It’s a perfect spot. Here are some good varieties to buy in seeds….from No Dig Vegetable Garden’s site.

  • Cabbage: Northern Giant Cabbage (100 lbs.)
  • Carrot: Japanese Imperial Long Carrot (12+ inches long)
  • Cucumber: Mammoth Zeppelin Cucumber (16 pounds)
  • Gourd: Giant Long Gourd (120 Inches)
  • Pumpkin: Atlantic Giant Pumpkin (400 to over 1000 pounds)
  • Tomato: Old Colossus Heirloom Tomato (2+ pounds)
  • Watermelon: Carolina Cross (Giant) Watermelon (200 pounds)
Meg loved the pumpkin patch at Gardner Village last October….

In the meantime, I’ll just have to enjoy all these other pumpkin patches. They are sprouting all around us. My grandkids love to go pick their Halloween pumpkin out from the patch.

Josie was a cute little dinosaur….so cute!

Hangin’ with my homies at the pumpkin patch….

I love those little kiddos….I love Halloween too…it’s my favorite holiday!

They like to sit on a tractor or two and go through the hay maze too. What fun it is in the fall in Utah. I love all the back to school stuff, apple picking and scarecrows in cornfields, the fall colors and the leaves changing too. And I love pumpkin patches in the fields.

Flower Gardening

08/20/2012 by moss 2 Comments

Gardener Wannabe….

We are lazy garden weeders.  I just want my gardens and yard to look good and I want to have fresh veggies, flowers and fruits…… and beautiful things everywhere….but I don’t want to worry about it!
I don’t ask for much do I?

I WISH my garden grew this great….I’m not a green thumb though. But I do try. I snapped this picture in Park City last weekend. I loved these flower bins on Main Street at the Arts Festival.

Here was my backyard terraces last year when we first planted the top and bottom layers of  the 3 terraces. I had lillies and mugo pines on the bottom terrace, and junipers and concord grape vines on the top terrace. And our veggies are in the middle terrace with the apple tree just to the left.
Love this new floral welcome mat I got for the backyard deck. Isn’t it cute?  It’s a Martha Stewart mat from Lowes.

So I try and try to add a few flower plants each week to my garden, hoping that I’ll have blooms going on all summer long, and hopefully into the fall. And that the weeds won’t ALWAYS take over.

We added flowers under the deck for he first time . These are hydrangeas in 3 colors, blue, purple and pink… and I added some impatiens too. It’s kinda wild under the deck!

The hydrangeas should do well in all the shade that is there…
You’ve GOT to love a field of Lavender, don’t you? Plant a few of these SOMEWHERE in your flower garden. But be aware, they will grow into a giant ball and take up space. This picture is from Doll in the Looking Glass. I love lavender fields. In another life I will have a big field to plant beautiful stuff in.  In this life I only have one mound of lavender. And it’s getting really HUGE! Gotta cut that sucker back very soon!
My backyard bottom terrace…with my lillies just coming up.

I tried starting a few plants early in the season with my 2nd grade class….I don’t know if is any better than just buying plants in May at the nursery and Home Depot. Mine aren’t any larger because of doing this early planting.  But it IS FUN TO DO WITH KIDS!
Gotta love some pretty purple annuals.

I loved this lilly. I paid a lot for it from the LILLY MAN at the Salt Lake Farmer’s Market, and now I know why. It is gorgeous!

The basic yellow are so easy to plant and they sure do give a lovely color spot! The best part is by next year I’ll be able to split the plants and take those bulbs and spread them around. Have you ever seen a yard completely full of lilly bulbs? I have, and it is FANTASTIC!

I found this spinning floral and butterfly spinner flag at Hobby Lobby in the garden clearance. It was $2.00!
My mugo pines and lilly garden.  I alternated 2 lillies and a mugo pine all across last year. So this year they are just coming up. Hopefully they will grow into green mounds over the next year.

In front of each mugo pine I places some annuals in different colors. It’s been so HOT though that they didn’t spread out as much as I’d have liked.
This is my “green thumb” neighbor’s yard that I aspire to.  Hers always looks much better than mine. ( jealous sighs….).
My berries are such a bright spot I think of them as beautiful buds too!

Red is my favorite color. I love this flower bed full of red. In California I had a rose garden full of shades of red. But in Utah, I have lots of bulbs instead. But I do miss all those “Double Delight” rose bushes I had….sniff, sniff…

Gotta love a beautiful sunset after a day of weedin’ in the flower garden. I took this picture at a Neil Diamond concert a week ago in our city. He’s old but his music is still a crowd pleaser. Just like a flower garden is.

Park City Arts Festival 2012

08/17/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

Hey guess what today is? My Anniversary! It’s my 33rd Anniversary to be exact. I can’t believe I’ve been married that long either. What the heck happened here? The time has flown. So anyway, we went to Park City to PAR-TAY! Just Johnny and me. It’s kind of an annual thing we do.

Handmade pottery. So pretty and unique.

I love to peruse artistic festivals and shops for things for the house and garden. There are always beautiful things made from iron, glass and stone, that would make a lovely addition to my yard. And it needs all the help it can get! So we go to the Park City Kimball Arts Festival every year around our anniversary in August. It’s a fun, food, and art filled extravaganza. We love it.

Glass blown fish….they were really beautiful.

I loved the floral arrangements along the paths of Main Street in Park City.

There are very talented artisans from all over the country that come to share their wares. And I love looking at all the florals along the path of Main Street. There are also lots of bronze statues everywhere and rock gardens.

This moose picture was painted on a slab of rock….

I wanted one of these glass globes.

I know for a fact that hundreds of artisans apply to be a part of the show. But they are very picky in who they choose. There are high end priced things all the way down to $10.00 items. There is something for everybody.

Beautiful pottery….so interesting. The inside is light blue…too bad my photog skills don’t match the skills of these artists.
I thought this loom was pretty cool….you can ask questions of any of the artisans there too. Many have created art for 30 years or more.
Now these would look cool in anybody’s garden….and you’d never have to water them!! They reminded me of our old California landscape where we had a few palm trees. Miss those palms! This is one way to get a palm tree in Utah! Or a fake cactus!

Kimball Arts Festival in Park City…stunning art! How would one of these look in your yard?
Glass Flowers….so beautiful!

Glass and pottery vases and art.
My favorites were the glass globes of every style and color. I loved looking at them all. They had tiny ones and giant ones.

Another bronze statue. I’ve been to a foundry to see how these are made…it is a very long and creative process.

I loved the ambiance of the restaurants along the path on Main Street in Park City. The blue lights were so pretty as the night wore on.  After dark everybody went to the bars and restaurants to socialize. Here is the 2nd floor, umbrella filled,  patio deck of one of them.
Blown glass fish…These were some of my favorite things at the Park City Arts Festival.

I snapped a picture of the artisan here, with his wares…lots of beautiful bracelets.

This was an interesting piece of glass art.

Bronze statue in the music courtyard where we stopped to listen to the band playing bluegrass music.

What a cool, carved, chess set! And I loved all the handmade jewelry there too.
We will go every year to the Kimball Arts Fesitval in Park City. There is so much to see!
Loved this goldfish…I wanted it so bad!!
I couldn’t believe the talent of the artisan who did these beautiful bronzes.  They were stunning.

These would look pretty hanging on my garden fence.

There were many paintings, but the artisans don’t like photographs taken of them….they say people can copy and blow up the photographs and sell them. So I snapped one of the windows of the art museums that line the path in Park City on Main Street.  It’s an artsy place any time of year.

There were even some purveyors of cheese and jams…this guy makes goat cheese and had samples to taste!

I should have bought some for my son, Jeff, who is into anything “goat” right now. 😀 That’s an inside family joke.

They always have good food and good music bands playing too. It’s such fun. We will be up at Park City for two weekends in a row this year. The hubs is dragging ME to the Tour of Utah bike race. Fun, right? Yeah. Men in bike shorts. That’s not too hard to take! Bada bing, bada boom!

6 Organizational Tips That Help Keep Things Neat

08/15/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

I am not a naturally organized person. I don’t have that kind of mind. I don’t notice messes creeping up on me until they are full blown disasters. So any tip, or help I can get from one of the detail oriented, masters of junk organization, I will take it.

,
I LOVE this idea for a wrapping organization station…that’s next on my list!

There are 6 ideas I’ve seen lately that I thought were fantastic and have already helped me a lot in my home. They just make life easier. One of them I saw on pinterest.  It is hanging your potholders inside of your cupboards on a little hook.

Found this idea on Pinterest

1.HANG RACKS  and /HOOKS INSIDE YOUR KITCHEN CUPBOARD DOORS!
I have potholders that always cause my not-deep-enough drawers to jam. Or else the potholders go over the drawer and fall behind the counter somewhere into oblivion. What a great idea!  This way they are always handy.  Another thing to put on the insides of cupboard doors in things like Pam oil spray and vinegars. They just junk up my shelves and I use them infrequently. But I want to be able to see them all at a glance.  Spices you use the most would be great there too. I have resorted to putting my most-used spices in a metal basket by the stove. It is just easier for me because I cook ALL THE TIME.

Great use of space with this Spice Rack Organizer. Open the cupboard….see it all right there!
I would love one of these for my pantry door….so much easier for organizing all those small containers of stuff!

2.PUT A BASKET ON YOUR DESK/VANITY/KITCHEN COUNTER/ FOR VARIETIES OF STUFF YOU USE EVERYDAY
I snuck around one of the really uber organized teachers at my school’s classroom the other day. I tried to notice what kinds of things help her stay organized. She has bins. Bins everywhere for every imaginable purpose.  On her desk was a basket JUST FOR NOTE PADS. She had all sorts of sticky notepads, cutesy ones, lunch lady notes, etc. By her sink she had Bandaids, Lotion, and Antibacterial soaps. AHA, my non-organized mind said to itself! I went home and looked at my kitchen. What do I use every single day that I could put in a basket to make life easier.

cookbook organization [kitchen]
Cookbook Storage idea….so cute!

I found cuter baskets than these in all colors at Hobby Lobby for every room in my house. Next I am going to put some cookbooks in baskets for the kitchen. Won’t that be cute? Found that idea on Pinterest too!

This basket/drawer is only $9.98! Check it out at Organize This button on my side bar. I used this idea to do my spice basket by my stove. It has saved me so much time searching for my everyday spices!

Here’s my new everyday spice basket. I have garlic, sugar, and everyday spices in a basket. My whole drawers used to be jammed with that kind of stuff. And I had to search through spices every day to find the garlic and lemon pepper and cinnamon. Now I have the “note basket” and the “spice basket” and in the laundry room I’ve put a “stain basket” with rags, all kinds of those bleach pens, soap, sprays. It has made life easier already. Look for an area to reduce junk in a drawer by placing a basket right next to where you need it.

Organized medicine cabinet---so simple and yet WHY didn't I think to do it this way?? BTW, this entire website has amazing organizing tips. Wish I could be as diligent as they are!
Another Pinterest Idea…..I LOVE these extra drawers on shelves ideas….it invites you to be more organized!

3. PUT A 3-DRAWER-SET OF RUBBERMAID DRAWERS ON DRESSERS/DESKS/CRAFT ROOMS/GARDEN AREA TO SORT THINGS YOU USE A LOT
Another thing I noticed is little plastic drawer sets. She had them for everything. Ever notice how much easier it is to organize stuff in drawers than in cupboards? Same principle. I started seeing these on sale at places like Target and Walmart too. So I bought a few sets.  I have used one set of like 91/2 x 11 size paper drawers for my sewing supplies. One has threads and needles and pincushions, another has zippers and seam binding, another has sewing machine bobbins and metal implements. I bought another 3 drawer set and I have used it for my makeup. One drawer is for lipsticks, one for foundations and blushes, and another for eye pencils and eye shadows.   It has worked great! I always have a few out on the counter still because I’m messy, but at least it isn’t dozens out. I bought a few tiny sets and put different colors of earrings in each drawer. “THIS IS SO COOL!” I said to myself. I hope I don’t go overboard on this one.

Find little drawer sets like these in all shapes and sizes at Walmart and Shopko. They are great time savers.

white two drawer cd organizer
CD storage drawers….check them out at Organize This on my sidebar.

4. PUT OVER THE DOOR 2-4 HOOK HANGERS ON ALL DOORS IN YOUR HOUSE/OFFICE/GARAGE/LAUNDRY ROOM ETC.
Another tip was finding hooks for over the door. I found lots of sets at T.J. Max with 2 to 8 hooks on them.  If every door in your house has a set of hanging hooks (over the door type are so easy) then you can hang jammies, bathing suits, towels, hoodies, coats, robes, anything and everything. So you don’t always have to hang stuff up. I love that idea! Because, as I said, I’m very LAZY. So hooks are my new fav thing. They would be great in kid’s rooms too because, trust me, they are lazy too! Give them one hook set for jammies, one hook set for hoodies and jackets, or sports team jerseys,  and a set in their bathroom for bathing suits and towels. We go in the jacuzzi a lot at my house so bathing suits are a drag if I don’t have a place for everyone’s suit to dry.

satin nickel duchess 5 hook over the door rack     overdoor jewelry organizer

I found a set like this at T.J. Max for only $5.99 and 2 sets of 2 hooks each were the same price! You could have hooks all over your house for less than $20 bucks! And think how organized you’d be!!

5. PUT LONG, FLAT, UNDERBED CONTAINERS FOR SHOES, BOOKS, AND SEASONAL STUFF
I used to just put books and extra office paper and extra file folders in these bins. And that is still a good idea. But now I found an even better under the bed bin idea. It’s for SHOES! Shoes are the bain of my un-neat world’s existence. I always have a pile of shoes in every room and bedroom, even the bathroom. I know, I’m not a neat freak!  I bought 2  of them just for my own shoes! It will help organize kids sports equipment, beach toys and beach wear versus winter toys and winter wear. Get the picture? No more drawers packed with all 4 seasons of stuff.

Look for this $9.98 Shoe Storage Container from the Button on my sidebar called Organize This!

.
One under the bed shoe storage has fancy shoes in it that I rarely ever wear. The one under my bed has tennis shoes and sandals (seasonal) styles. So my closet has the ones I wear everyday. It has helped soooo much. And these things are less that $10 bucks! What a great deal.

6. GET A NEW, TALL, SKINNY TRASH CAN FOR WRAPPING PAPER ROLLS
I used to put all the wrapping paper rolls and ribbon rolls in an under-the-bed container. It helped keep that stuff organized for me but I always had to drag it out, open it, rummage through, etc.. until I made one of my kid’s bedrooms a craft room when they moved out. Then I moved that stuff to a Rubbermaid tall trash can and have it next to a little table. These trash cans will fit in a bedroom corner of the room!  3 drawer container for ribbons scissors and tape is right nearby! It has made gift wrapping a cinch! I love that little area of my craft room so much now! Sometimes I go in there just to stare at my gift wrapping area. I dump scraps in the trash after wrapping things too! 😀

work in color
I wish my desk looked something like this…but it is coming along…I’ve improved with just these 6 simple tips!

I like the new idea of “a place for everything” and everything in it’s place. (well, THAT will never happen!) but it does help me.  I just bought a tiny three drawer set for my earings. So I liked it so much I bought 2 more. Now I have a drawer for every color of earring. And I got a set of hooks for my necklaces. My goal is to get a hook for every necklace color. Great idea right?

Soccer Games 2012

08/13/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

Miss Megan is the funniest soccer player on the planet.

Big sista Marisa’s game was the next hour. I caught them between games and snapped a cute sista shot.

She got bored with her soccer game and all the running she had to do.

She is easy to spot with her hot pink shorts on the all boy team. She kept holding hands with the blonde kid to her left.

So she decided to hug and hold hands with all the little boys on her all-boy (except her) team.

She was running a lot of the time, and would just sit down and do a somersault or two….then get up and run again.
Finishing up a somersault while the coach isn’t looking…so cute!

Then she did some somersaults, and then she finally just picked up the ball, ran over to the goal, dropped it, and kicked it in.

All smiles after THAT sneaky goal! Everybody was just howling with laughter!

It was the funniest moment of the game. And the most fun at a soccer game I’ve ever had. She is a riot.

Blackberry Peach Crisp Recipe

08/09/2012 by moss Leave a Comment

I picked these peaches today off of my tree to make some Blackberry Peach Crisp. Yum!
Blackberry Peach Crisp with toasted pecans….what a great summer dessert using fruits from your garden!

RECIPE FOR FRESH BLACKBERRY-PEACH CRISP
1 cup of quick cooking oatmeal
1 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup butter of room temperature butter
6 to 8 medium fresh peaches sliced  (enough to cover bottom of 9 x 9 or larger casserole dish)

1/2 cup fresh blackberries (or raspberries)
1/2 cup pecan halves or pieces
3 teaspoons cinnamon
3/4 teaspoons salt

Always use REAL BUTTER for your Peach Crisp…it will taste better!
Combine oats, sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Add butter and mix. Cut butter into oats mixture. Arrange sliced peaches in a 8 x 8 or 10 x 6 inch, oiled baking dish.
Fresh Blackberries from my bushes! I am getting a good crop this year. Thanks to Barbara Butler for sharing her thinned out blackberries with me.  This yield is just todays, picked from only 2 plants.
Here are the peaches from my tree right before I peeled them and sliced them for my Blackberry Peach Crisp.
I peeled my peaches but you do not have to. I’ve done it both ways, skin off and skin on and it’s always good no matter what. . My tree peaches are just VERY fuzzy, so I like to remove the skins and slice them up.
You can see my blackberries added! Yum!  This is right before I added the pecans and popped it into the oven!
Cover peaches with a few squirts of lemon juice so they don’t turn brown, and a few teaspoons sugar. Spread the blackberries around.  Mix up all the rest of the ingredients in your mixer and then sprinkle the crumb mixture evenly over the fruit. Top with pecan halves or pieces. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes at 350. Let set for 15 minutes before serving. Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

You can see those yummy toasted pecans. I just lay them all over the top and they toast so nicely!
This is right before I took a giant bite. mmm…..

Lavender Gifts from the Garden

08/08/2012 by moss Leave a Comment

garden stake party favors
Love this little idea from Celebrations at Home.

I LOVE this idea. What a great party favor for a shower or hostess gift.  My lavender bushes are so HUGE now I think taking a little piece of the lavender off and putting it into pots is something I’m going to try. Let’s see if it works.  The little garden “stake” is also cute. It has Thank You rubber stamped on the little ruler of wood.  Gotta love a homemade gift.

How to Split Lavender Plants  (according to eHow)

  • Water your lavender one to two days before division. To divide, use a shovel or spade to dig around your clump of lavender. Dig around all four sides, about 4 to 6 inches deep, and cut in under the main section of your plant . Pull down on your spade or shovel’s handle to lift the lavender out of the soil. If the clump is too big, dig down in the middle of the clump to make smaller, more manageable sections.
I’m going to try this in the fall for the best plant splitting results.  I hope there are still some blooms in September! I can give some lavender as a gift to my neighbors and friends!

How to Plant BULBS like Hostas Daylillies and Iris Bulbs

08/04/2012 by moss Leave a Comment

I just LOVE this Daylilly. It’s one of my favorites in the garden this past summer. I had planted it just last year, so it’s the first time I’d seen it come up. What a beauty!

As Rudyard Kipling was known to observe:

“Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing:–“Oh, how beautiful!” and sitting in the shade,
While better men than we go out and start their working lives
At grubbing weeds from gravel-paths with broken dinner-knives
“

                                     Hostas
Hostas are some of the best bulb perennials of the garden. I love them. They will add a beautiful green mound to every flower bed. They are great shade plants, so they don’t do so well  in full sun. They also have flowers, which are a great feature in some of the varieties. If you have any partly sunny /partly shady spot at all, you should try some hasta bulbs. They are hardy, and they also work well as groundcovers. I love their little mounds in my front flower beds and under my deck by the pond.

This  neat photo of Hostas growing well is from the Garden Park of Oak Park, River Forest

IRIS
These bulb plants  bring beauty to a garden in the sun or shade. They will bloom in the early summer or late spring, and have beautiful foliage too. I’ve always loved this plant and there are some exciting new varieties to grow, Most are purple and blue in color. But I have quite a few varieties, even bearded iris and some white iris. All are very special, as you can see.

Beautiful IRIS from South Texas Gardening.

DAYLILLIES

Photo from Perennials Made Easy. Here are many varieties to choose from at Nature Hills website.

My favorite bulbs are daylillies. They come in so many colors and are sooooo easy to plant and have flourish in the garden. I find them at Farmer’s Markets where there are flower growers there. They will always give me a good deal for some unusual varieties. And I don’t have to pay shipping!

Here are just a few I planted last year and they came up so pretty!

Here’s How to Plant Bulbs

1. Plant your iris 2″ deep and 3″-4″ apart for the most brilliant display. The bulbs look like small pointed onions; plant with the point facing up.
2. After planting, water well soaking the area.

3. If you are putting them in pots or containers here is a good guide:
                For 12-15″ pots – plant 9
                For 10″ pots – plant 7
                For 8″ pots – plant 5
4. Most iris love full sun, hostas like partial shade, so be sure to check your bulb’s recommendations before choosing a spot to plant.

I love this garden photo from VW Garden. Check it out HERE.

I’ve been enjoying the perennials in our flower gardens a lot this summer. I think planting a few more sets of bulbs in different areas will be a great goal this fall. I’ll be looking for some unique varieties this week. Some good deals can be found at Costco and Home Depot soon too.
