Revive your Deck with Restore Paint

06/17/2012 by moss Leave a Comment

The awful Deck.  This is the BEFORE DECK RESTORE picture.

I took the power washer and washed off the entire deck really good. It took me an hour or so. Then I let it dry.

Close up of how badly we needed some RESTORE DECK PAINT done  here….

This Deck Restore Paint is the greatest product EVER!  It is from Home Depot. If you don’t want to redo your whole deck in Trex, this is a good alternate solution. It really made our deck look better.

RESTORE DECK PAINT  comes in a gallon can and we bought an applicator roller that had a texture to it. Some kits it is included.

We sanded it just a big wire brush, just to loosen anything that might chip off. We picked a dark brown but unfortunately they didn’t have our exact shade. You have to choose from their color selection which isn’t a huge variety, but there are about 20 colors. And we could have color matched. I think we should have, but we are getting ready to paint the house anyway, so no worries.

Here is a short video showing HOW to spread the DECK RESTORE PAINT onto your old deck.  It looks really easy, AND IT WAS!  Especially for me because all I did was watch! Well, and I cleaned up too. 😀

Here is the hubs doing the MANLY WORK!   We got a color matching THE RESTORE PAINT for the posts and the  railings around the deck. I still haven’t done it…..I am such a procrastinator!  Maybe I can get him to do THAT TOO!  hmmm…..

I decided our old umbrella had seen better days. So I got a fresh, new, green umbrella and some cute outdoor cushions and a few decorations for the deck. It was so boring before!  But doesn’t the deck planks look fantastic? Oh yeah!

We added these copper, solar lights to the end posts of the deck, they were about  $15.00 each  at the end of the summer last year. Aren’t they pretty? Check them out Here at Home Depot.

My cute granddaughters chasing the chickens…so cute.
Hey chicky chicky!….. don’t put your finger in there or you’ll be sorry!

It’s fun to see pay dirt on all our hard work….now it’s fun to go outside again!
I think we figured out the secret. You have to just pick a section of yard….and then….just to do a little bit every few days…with a break in between. Be forewarned that it was discouraging at first. But seeing it improve over time is FUN!

My Dog Bruce

06/13/2012 by Pattie 1 Comment

Our doggie, our buddy died last weekend.  We are all so sad around here.
My hubs made this silly youtube of Bruce just sitting here sleeping last year…..don’t think anything
will be happening in it….he just…..well……sleeps……his favorite pastime…..
He was always around us,  following us like a duck, playing when we played…..sitting on the jacuzzi steps while
we went in……waiting for us by the front window when we came home from things……
Chasing us around while we rode on the quads…..or bikes…..or used the lawn mower…..or the vacuum…. He’d go nuts trying to “bite” the vacuum…..
Running to you when you got home from work…..always ready to play!
He was always happy to see you…..even if you were a stranger….he was a very friendly little dude….
He loved going on a road trip with us……..Once we looked all over the house for him after we got the truck all packed….and we finally found him like this….waiting patiently in the car.  He didn’t want to be left behind……
He would hog up all the space in the front seat though…..:D And snore loudly the whole way there…..
Anybody new in the house….he would sniff them up and down…..sometimes he had to mark  his territory….
It wasn’t very funny when he did that on the guest bed when my brother came to stay……

He had his own doggie door so he could come and go as he pleased….in rain or snow……

He really loved hanging out at the Bear Lake cabin with us. He loved chasing around the prairie dogs….and the grand kiddos…..
He was Megan’s shadow sometimes…..and mine all the time….I miss that…..
We got him after our son, Danny, died in a car accident 7 years ago.  Hugging and petting him helped us feel a little bit better somehow…… Thanks for doing that for us, Brucie.
He hated to miss anything while riding in the car….he would huddle up as close to the conversation as he could get…..
He’d sleep on my bed if I let him…..sometimes I let him…….
And he just did his “thang” most of the time…..snorting…..chasing a ball….knocking over the trashcans looking for a discarded scrap or treat…..watching the birds in our backyard eating from the bird feeders…….
He was sweet….and….. I loved him…..
He used to be Devin’s dog….but he gave him to us…..and he was just part of our family.

I used to think people who took pictures of their dogs and sent them out at Christmastime were kind of dorky…..till I got a dog.  And then we took his picture all the time.  Funny how that is…..We became dorks too.

John, called him “My Little Buddy”…..he will miss him the most I think.
My little Brucie was a good dog for us. And he will be missed a whole lot…..sniff…….

Butterfly Art Project

06/12/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

Using tissue paper behind holes cut in a butterfly shape makes some pretty artsy butterflies!

They almost look like stained glass windows!

Make 2 of the black shapes and cut them out with the same holes if you want the back to look pretty too. Then you can hang them in a window like a sun catcher! So pretty!

Butterfly books to go along with the art project…..

I’ve been seeing a lot of these in my flower garden this week too!  So pretty!

School’s Out For Summer!

06/07/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

Here’s what I’ve been up to the last week of school…..making chicken alfredo pasta at home….
Check it out HERE at Weekday Chef. That is my cooking blog.  It keeps me busy when I’m bored. 😀
Chicken alfredo pasta….yum!

And we were making PINK SLIME at school……pretty cool…it’s made from glue and water and borax. Check out the recipe HERE at Patties Classroom. That’s my other blog.

This is NOT the same pink slime that has been in the news….made for hamburger making…..Yuck.

And I’ve been babysitting my granddaughters for the weekend.  We had a boatload of fun. They love going in the jacuzzi. But you won’t be finding a pic of me in a bathing suit here. I’d drop dead first. 😀

We also performed our Fairy Tale plays for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades.  We had The 3 Billy Goats Gruff…..

Goldilocks and the 3 Bears…..cute costumes right? Got them sooooo cheap, you’d be amazed!

We sang a few songs….with ladybugs and props……….

And then, of course, we couldn’t forget about The 3 Little Pigs! We had BYU versus University of Utah in this 3 Little Pigs Story….it was funny.

Now I’m off at my cabin in the mountains of Bear Lake, playing on my quads. Life is good.

It’s very peaceful out here……
a
at our cabin at Bear Lake….
And we just do what we want…..
Ahh…..summer vacation…..we’ll be going to Yellowstone to river raft tomorrow……

I may come back next week.....or…..maybe not.

Father’s Day Treats

06/01/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

This year for Father’s Day I think we will do little mini bundt cakes wrapped up in  little cellophane bags with this darling little quote attached.

It reminds me of all the things dads say all the time throughout your lives when they think they are teaching you small lessons. LOL.  I guess I learned a lot from my dad. Mostly just by what kind of a helpful neighbor he was. I loved that about him. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.

I had the best dad of all time. I look forward to seeing and talking with him again someday.

This cute little subway art is darling.  It’s from a profitable life’s blog.  We will be at Lake Powell on Father’s Day. It will be the bomb. 😀

Tulip Festival at Thanksgiving Point

05/27/2012 by moss Leave a Comment

Every year around this time I find the need to go see something breathtakingly beautiful.
Maybe it is because school is in its last month, and it is hard to do the home stretch of school for some teachers….Like me.   I hate it and I love it at the same time when school comes to an end.
You can probably guess why I love it, summer vacation and all….. but I hate it too.  It’s like a fun party that is now over. That’s how it feels for me.  I love my job. I love teaching little kids. It’s the greatest job on earth.
Even though mine is WAY down on the list of The 100 Best Jobs in America…..CHECK it out! My job, Elementary school teacher, #92, isn’t as good as a Funeral Director’s, but is a tad better than a sewage plant operator! LOL

This year will be particularly hard for me because I’ve taught most of  these darling kids for 2 years and I love them all.

So I go to find beauty in the world somewhere……and here it is at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, Utah.
If you need a lift….go see a beautiful flower garden….it will  light up your life!  JUST LOOK AT IT!!!
How could you not feel joy looking at yards and yards of this?
As I walked from one garden to another I kept thinking, “Well, now THIS one is my favorite….no, no….now THIS one is!”
I had planted tulips in my own garden for the first time this year…and they came up as such a lovely surprise just after winter….right as the last snow was just melting….
But the deer in our neighborhood found them a week later and ate all the beautiful, red tops off!!!
Now I’m just left with the leaves and stems….it’s pretty funny looking….
But these tulip gardens are simply breathtaking, and there is a glorious  riot of color everywhere….
I love it at Thanksgiving Point Tulip Festival….it’s only at the beginning of April every year….it lasts for just a few weeks!
And then it is gone.  Just like Spring in Utah. I dragged the hubs even though he has a bad knee and can’t walk for long…
But he is such a trooper anyway because he knows how much I love being there….
It’s like Disneyland for a flower lover…..
In the gift shop I loved this wall of clocks…..everything was very expensive there…..We saw an $8,000 couch.  Yeah, I don’t think we will be buying our furniture there….
I think this was my true favorite….purple, white and red…..
Did I tell you red was my favorite color?
We got a nice stranger to snap this pic…the hubs and I.
Then we drove out to Wendover the the Peppermill Concert Hall to see Dana Carvey’s comedy show. Gotta love the church lady.  It was so funny I  laughted till I cried! These kinds of things make life worth livin…..
Beauty and Laughter…2 of the best things in life.

Mother’s Day 2012

05/26/2012 by Pattie 1 Comment

We had Don and Merlene’s 30th Wedding Anniversary party the day before Mother’s Day….It was sweet.

Here is everybody who came…minus me who is taking the picture…..
Tiffany did a slide show and Heather (both granddaughters) did a Snapfish book. Both were beautiful.
I made the cute yellow sign and glittered it up….:D

Mother’s Day was fun and relaxing. I got lots of flowers……

Lillies from the hubs….

Roses from my oldest son, Jeffrey!

What a lovely surprise these were….he had just returned from Viet Nam the day before…and wasn’t feeling very good…..but he came over anyway with these lovely flowers!  Woo Hoo!  He wins today!

My daughter Tiff knows I am the Weekday Chef Link HERE to see  and I ALWAYS  love new kitchen things!

And my son Devin got me these for our Bear Lake Cabin patio…these little solar lights will be SO CUTE!  I loved them.

And we had Texas Roadhouse pulled pork sandwiches so I didn’t really have to cook.  Everybody brought something yummy and we had fun eating them all up.  I especially loved Tiff’s berry cheesecake and Caitlin’s buttery shortcake and strawberries and cream….mmmmm…..they were even better the next day.  Thank you all for making my day wonderful!

A Funny Mother’s Day Story

05/13/2012 by Pattie 1 Comment

I thought I would share one of my near and dearest stories of being a mom. NOT! I was Stake Primary President, the church Sunday School for the children aged 3 to 11.  I was holding a board meeting down the street at a friend’s house.

Busy church activities sometimes took over my life…sometimes.

I knew I would only be gone a little over an hour and my husband was on his way home from work. I called him and he assured me he would be home by 7:00.  So I left my 11 year old daughter Tiff in charge of 4 kids aged 4 to 11. But I  forgot, (excellent mom that I am) to give her the phone number. I left the kids playing with play dough and with plenty of snacks and took off.

Me on a much better day…

Little did I know how wrong I would be. About an hour later I got a call from a neighbor Terry, down the street. She said the words no mom wants to hear, “Pattie, I don’t want to alarm you, but you better get home right this minute!” and she didn’t tell me why. I jumped in the car and tore home (about 2 blocks). As I turned my corner my eyes  met with  police cars, lights flashing, paramedics, and the fire department all in my driveway. And no cars of ours there.

The hubs and I…he always made the hard things easier for me….he’s still.my best friend.

And just about every neighbor in my entire neighborhood standing out on their front lawn wondering where in the heck the parents were and what terrible disaster had struck inside the house while those no good parents were gone who knows where!

Yeah, it was a memory I will never forget….all those flashing lights on my front lawn…UGH!

When I got there I ran inside with my heart in my stomach, praying all was well. I met a fireman that goes to my church and asked him what had happened. It is comical now, but at the time, not so much.  My 6 year old had put some of the playdough in his ear and the kids tried getting it out. When they couldn’t they called 911 to ask how to get playdough out of somebody’s ears.

Yeah. A real emergency, playdough in the ears. I couldn’t even believe it.  I learned later that my 11 year old daughter had told the police, “My mom is at a church meeting.” So the officer had taken her in his squad car down to my church and paraded around asking where I was.  Yeah. I know.  Not just my neighborhood was I toast, but now also at church. Complete humiliation!  It was a really bad night for a mom, as you can just imagine.

The funny part comes later when all the hoopla had left my house. I had pulled all the curtains. The kids had gone to bed and I was sitting in the dark crying, my happy go lucky husband shows up. He’d forgotten HE ALSO had a church meeting. He was a high counselor in our church and also had a 7:00 pm meeting he’d forgotten AND neglected to tell me about. So he simply went straight to his meeting thinking the kids also would be OK for an hour. So we both blew it!

The next day was Halloween. Yeah. I remember trick or treating through my neighborhood THAT year.

At Halloween this year with my 3 granddaughters….MUCH more fun!

So I guess, time + crisis = humor, as they say. I can laugh about it now, but it was probably my worst experience as a mom. But as all moms know, there are a multitude of stories,  equally awful, that we could substitute, am I right? I can tell you with complete conviction, looking back, it is ALL WORTH IT.

Cuz look what I got!

My family is the best, most important thing in my life.  Enjoy them while they are little. It goes so quick. Happy Mother’s Day to all who mother, whether it is your own kids or others, we all honor you today. For all the highs and all the lows, for all the laundry, the meals, the parent-teacher conferences, the doctor visits, the Scouts, music lessons, laundry, PTA meetings, sports, taxiing, did I mention the laundry?… homework you helped with and Birthday parties you planned. It’s your day to shine!  Happy Mother’s Day!

The college grad playdough pusher…..yes I’ve gotten over it…it took a lot of therapy…….just kidding. Who could afford therapy?….I had good friends. And that’s the best a mom can ask for.

Backyard Terrace Before and After

05/13/2012 by moss Leave a Comment

We have seriously neglected our backyard for the last few years. We were busy remodeling a kitchen and basement and bedrooms last year and the previous years. We had to redo floors and paint walls and remodel in the summer. So somethings gotta give, right? Yeah, it was the backyard. I just ignored it and let it grow wild!

Seriously neglected backyard terraces

Terraced  gardens  & grapevines…what a “before” mess!  Ugh!!
Much better Backyard gardens “after” all the work….

Lillies just starting to bloom! Woo HOO!

We added Solar Fence Post Caps in copper…they light up at night…super COOL!

These you can get from Lowes or Home Depot. Or check out my store for NIGHT LIGHTS, all kinds of wonderful solar lighting items for some beautification of your backyard or patio or deck!!!

This is definitely the BEFORE PICTURE of our flagstone steps! YUCK!  Can you believe it?  Not really…no….

The backyard stairs were done about 5 years ago with flagstone. They looked really good the first year, but after that all kinds of stuff grew all around and in between the rocks and it looked awful.
Then the neighbor’s cement fence post fell on it. He was going through some financial woes, so we knew he couldn’t pay to have it fixed. Murphy’s Law. I knew there would be a reckoning day where from neglect we’d have to do all that WEEDING! And fixing! Oh CRAP! Do I HATE yard work? Yes, I do.

Not perfect….but definitely an improved “after” picture….

So anyway THIS was the year we had to do it. Soooooo,  we started on the middle terrace and pulled all the weeds and roto-tilled it, and added some soil amendment to it. Then we started our summer garden after all the snow in May melted. We had snow until the end of May! We had a very late start to Spring this year!

gardening stuff….just getting ready to do all that WORK!

Well, if you are like us and have a climate that gets SNOW like ours does, you need to do the requisite sprinkler repair every single solitary year. What the heck happens with sprinklers anyway. Is it some kind of evil conspiracy that a fifth of them need to be replaced every other year? So of course we had to fix like a GAZILLION sprinklers! What is up with those constantly breaking sprinkler heads? Don’t love those things. So I’ll be busy working on those for the next week or so. And in the meantime, check out my veggie garden . It’s just coming together!

One of the little loves of my life, my granddaughter Josie! She  just turned 2!

We had put in lots of fruit trees years back and they are finally starting to produce….not lots of stuff mind you…maybe a dozen fruits per tree….but it’s yummy and very fascinating to watch those trees just do their “thang”.

I have a big selection of gardening gloves. I like to use them whenever I’m weeding so I don’t destroy my fingernails too badly. I have some washable cheaper ones I use when I’m watering or in wet mud. Then I just throw them in the laundry bin. I think I’ve got about 7 pairs of gloves now. It does help me want to go out and weed the yard if I have nice tools.

aPrIcOtS

We also have an apple tree, a peach and nectarine tree and an apricot tree.  None of them ever have done really well except the apple.  I think our soil is just too sandy.  We have a pond in the backyard too and it looked just dreadful and it was clogged and yucky.  So we had to redo that too.  And neither one of us are “garden” people.

Ya gotta have some wind chimes…..

We are lazy weeders.  I just want it to look good and I want to have fresh veggies…… and beautiful things everywhere….but I don’t want to worry about it! I don’t ask for much do I?

We added flowers under the deck for he first time too…Hydrangeas in the SHADE!!!

The garden looks a WHOLE lot better here in the after picture… we’ve got tomatoes too!

We repainted the deck. It was quite a sight! We used that new RESTORE paint. Check out my post on the deck too.

Here’s how it looks now….its fun to go out and BBQ again! Woopie!

It’s fun to see pay dirt on all our hard work….now it’s fun to go outside again!
I think we figured out the secret….just to do a little bit every few days…it was discouraging at first….but seeing it get better over time…(and still a ways to go) has been very rewarding.  And maybe…just maybe I’m not such a black thumb after all!
