Family Fun Times Valentines….

02/22/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

I went to a Valentines Dinner Party the other night and I tried the most delicious dip! It was with fresh cranberries and cilantro with a little jalapeno, lemon juice, sugar and cumin. It sounded so easy. I hung out by this dip the ENTIRE night!  It is embarrasing when I find something I love I just can’t stop eating it!  That’s my downfall! FOOD!  go figure…..

Oh YUMMY is this stuff heavenly!  I could stand here and eat it all day!

Cranberry Salsa Dip with Cream Cheese

INGREDIENTS:
12 ounces or about 3 cups fresh cranberries chopped in blender or chopper
1 green onion, VERY finely minced (I used mostly the green ends)
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped
1 small jalapeno pepper, seeded, cored,  and finely diced (cut it in half if you don’t like some HEAT)
3/4 cup sugar (you can add a whole cup but it is very syrupy and sweet…I’d knock it down to 3/4 cup)
1/2 teaspoon cumin
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (from about 1 large lemon)
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 (8 ounces each) packages cream cheese, light or regular, softened
Wheat Thin Crackers, for serving or Tortilla Chips
Chop about 3/4 cup at a time in your blender on “pulse”…or use a food processor for speed….
You can freeze fresh cranberries in the bag to use all year…did you know that?  Yeah,
the cranberry salsa keeps in the freezer too….so I put half of it away in a tupperware for another party!
It looks like a lot of cilantro when you are done…so you could go less on it if you wanted….
The sugar is really sweet….It would taste okay to use less if you are watching sugar intake….

My hubs bought the jalapeno and it was large so I only used about half of it
and saved the other half for chili I made the next day….

I didn’t have a lemon so I used lime juice….It was okay but I think lemon tastes much better…
but lime will do in a pinch for sure!

DIRECTIONS:
Pick over the cranberries looking for smashed or bruised ones. Then use your blender for the cranberries or a  food processor and  coarsely chop about 3/4 of a cup at a time.  Put into a bowl and add the sugar. Then chop the green onions, cilantro, jalapeno and add them in and mix up. Then add cumin, lemon juice and salt and mix. Transfer the mixture to a covered bowl or tupperware and refrigerate for 4 hours (or up to overnight) so cranberries lose  their tartness.

When ready to serve, put the block of cream cheese on a really pretty plate.  Top with the cranberry mixture.  Surround the plate with wheat thins crackers.  So very Yummy!
I really like it with Wheat Thins because chips fall apart when you try to push them
into the cream cheese….it may be better with soft whipped cream cheese…but it wouldn’t look as pretty on the plate…..

You could line the pie plate with cream cheese and pour the cranberries over it…
but I think the block looks so elegant and pretty spread with the cranberry salsa…..

I wonder if it would be good on a fresh turkey sandwich…hmmm….I’ve got a
turkey in the freezer too…I think I’ll have to experiement on that!!

My friend Debbie shared the recipe with me at the Valentine party.  It’s a great appetizer for any get together. The thing is we have to stock up on those cranberries when they are out in the produce section.  I happened to have a bag I had stashed away in the freezer. So lucky day for us!

Valentines Dinner party….for the fam….

My Valentine Dinner table…so cute, right?  I love the hanging heart ornaments hangin
from the chandelier….

Here’s my granddaughters at their little Valentine kiddie table with the heart plates….aren’t they sweet?
This was my valentine this year….delivered to my classroom by Mr. Moss!

The hubs got me some Valentines flowers….I forgot to take a close up pic
till the little baby roses were kinda wilted….oh well…it’s still a fun memory…

I love that guy still after 30something years….

Texas Sheet Cake for dessert…..done by cute Caitlin and Devin…the newleyweds…
See that little piece missing?  I did that…..no will power at all….sigh….

And yummy German Chocolate brownies…done by my daughter Tiffany….

And cute Valentines Strawberry cupcakes….the kids loved these….

And we played this very fun game….check it out sometime!

It’s a great Valentines Day dip for a fun party or for anytime!

Glass Blowing at Thanksgiving Point Art Institute

02/18/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

We were over at Thanksgiving Point last Saturday.  This activity is really fun if you have half a day and $25.00. You can make a glass blown flower for a bud vase in any color you want.  We enjoyed watching the glass experts teaching the students how it is done.  After hanging out at the Petting Zoo at Thanksgiving Point we walked over to the Glass Blower’s Shop and Art Gallery and watched them making glass art.

I loved the blue vase in the middle…..It was only $100 bucks…So much better to make your own!
Marisa picked up this flower and wanted to go show it to her mom…..I just about peed my pants!
Grabbing it gently away from her as I felt my stomach full of butterflies….These things are so fragile!

Beautiful Glass Blown Art everywhere…it’s quite a sight! They have it lighted so beautifully…..
Caitlin and Devin at the Thanksgiving Point Glass Blower’s Shop….
This trree had lights on the top and bottom glowing through the glass blown  tree disks….
That middle one looks kinda like a fried egg….LOL…
He was blowing up a ball of glass….very cool to watch…
These beauties were all over $200 each….very striking in person!  I think these are just pure works of art.

Valentine Animals from Hearts

02/16/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

Here are some samples I found on the web to give us inspiration for a half hour of creative art with our 6th grade buddies last week.

I think I had about 15 of the  6th graders and about 10 2nd graders in my class for this buddy activity the day before Valentines.  Each of our classes wrote letters to our buddies for Valentines Day and sent them
some candy of some sort.  We gave suckers and licorice.  They gave us chocolate mini candy bars…Mmmm!

Some kids in my class have 2 buddies….because the 6th grade classes are larger than 2nd grade classes….

But everybody really likes who they got for a buddy…no matter if it is one kid or two kids….

Then We made creations just using scraps of construction paper from our recycling bin and heart cut outs from red, pink, purple and white. Look at what fun it was for just 30 minutes the day before Valentines!

We’ve played kickball with our buddies…we’ve done multiplication games with our buddies….So we thought,
as teachers…maybe we could do a joint art project with our buddies?
Valentine Creations abounded…..

They also invited us to their production of MacBeth, the Shakesperian play….it was fantastic!

Here are some close ups of all the “animals” we created…..
And some close ups of the kids who created them….with some buddy help…..

I am not the greatest photog that ever lived as you can see…

I think they were all proud of their creations….
We’ll have to do this again next year!
Valentines Creative Art Projects….

Hope everybody had a Happy Valentines Day!

Thanksgiving Point Petting Zoo

THANKSGIVING POINT….A FUN PLACE TO PLAY WITH YOUR FAMILY..
A day on the Thanksgiving Point Farm…..with my family…Super fun time!
Gift shop…can we have some of these little farm animals grandma?
“I like the piggy”……..”I like the horse”…..

Looking around at how they milk the cows and the milk assembly line…

My daughter snapped a pic with me and the grandbabies….I lub them…..

There is a lot to see on the Farm at Thanksgiving Point….And we got pony rides, a hayride, and the petting zoo all
for only $2.50.  Tiff has an annual pass to the farm so she got us in half price…COOL!  Loved THAT!

Hey, we weigh as much as a little baby lamb!

Hi grandma!  Look at the cute cows?  They look so soft…

We watched horses getting shod with horse shoes….did you ever see the size of those nails they
pound into the horse’s hooves?  Crazy! But they say it doesn’t hurt!

But as you’ll notice, they DO have to tie the horse all up…..hmmmm…….

It was such a fun day at the Petting farm…..mostly because the weather was just so perfect. I think it was 50 degrees in UTAH IN THE WINTER!  wHAt is UP wItH  tHAt?

Giddy UP Partner!
We couldn’t get my granddaughter to go on the horse, and then the nice lady running the ponies just took her
and talked to her about petting the horse, letting it smell her hand and get to know her, and then
just sat her up on one and walked around with her….it was like magic!

Aww….can you resist that cute face at all? Nope….not me…..

We were so amazed and appreciative….she did something she’s never done before!  Woo Hoo!

She’s not too sure she likes it yet…..

Giddy-up!

OK I’m liking this….

Look at me, look at me!  I’m riding a cute little horsie!

Aren’t these guys  cool?  Really pretty with the horns and all…
here a goat…there a goat….everywhere a goat goat….E-I-E-I-OOOOOOOO
Uncle Devin teaches how it’s done…..what a good uncle he is….

The goats kept fighting each other to get the food from the girls….It’s really a Goat eat Goat World
out there isn’t it?  Well….out there at the petting zoo that is….

Cool horns on these goats….probably the most fun animals to feed….we had a few
bags of corn and meal to give them….

This goat stood on this rock mountain  the whole time we were there….I guess he wishes he was on a REAL mountain somewhere…..or maybe he is just a mountain goat doin his thang…..I dunno….

Hi Grandma!  Look at this freaky goat!  Baaaa!

Feeding the goats…..

Can you believe how UGLY this turkey is?  It looks like the face of PREDATOR, THE MOVIE!

I did like his black and white feathers…..Turkey Turkey…..
Acting like one of the animals….. Doesn’t she look like a turkey?  LOL

A pretty peacock….we couldn’t get him to open up his pretty feathers though….we kept squawking
and making honking noises…..he probably gets that a lot…..yeah…we looked dumb doing that…I’ll admit it!

Grandpa ROCKS!

I love my gramps….

The kids loved seeing all the gentle horses….

Befriending a black beauty horse….

Feeding the ducks at the duck and swan pond….

There were little playhouses too…cute photo op!
The highlight of the trip for me was the hayride around the farm…..so relaxing….

We’re goin on a tractor ride!

Loved the wagon ride….

I saw this many ducks at the pond grandma! Count em….one….two….

Hayride truck….without any hay in it!  I enjoyed the ride around Thanksgiving Point so much
I didn’t want to get off when it was over…..so peaceful and relaxing!

Johnny being silly on the kiddie tractor…..I think I could make one of those outta wood!   That would
look really cute at my Bear Lake cabin in the yard!
Boy was that FUN!  Now let’s go EAT LUNCH!  Rumbi here we come!
We had a great time at the Farm at Thanksgiving Point!  The docents and
guides were all so nice and helpful and sweet to the kids….Loved our day outdoors…

A Treat for our Military

02/08/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

What did you think of Madge’s Super Bowl Halftime Show?  I thought it ended on a fantastic note but I waited awhile to feel like it got started. The dancers and their costumes on the beginning 2 songs were just so so. And she picked kind of low key songs to play to the biggest crowd on earth, I thought. She should have picked her best standard songs, the ones we all recognize.NOT a new, unrecognizable, kind of boring song.

But her costumes were good and I liked the tightrope dancer and the choir behind her. I don’t know what cheerleaders were all about, that was kinda weird.  And I guess the World Peace, although cheesy was a good message at the end. She always has some kind of message.

The worst thing during the game was seeing on the running tape under the t.v. feed  that Susan Powell’s husband had blown he and his kids up. The poor social worker who dropped the boys off and then was barred from entering the home. She smelled gas and couldn’t do anything about it. That’s such an awful position to put another human being in. I can’t believe that guy is such a gutless pig. The inlaws knew he might do something like this and their worst fears came true. How would you live after having your daughter murdered and then you 2 little grandsons, who you had custody of, murdered too. What a poor excuse for a human being. And he left a 3 word “sorry” note to his lawyer.

On a bright note, I loved reading this news in the paper today:

Frank Guidara, CEO of the Boston-based pizza chain Uno’s

and a Vietnam vet himself, teamed up with Pizzas4Patriots

and DHL Express to ship 10,000(!) deep-dish pizzas to U.S

troops in Afghanistan who will be able to watch the New

England Patriots versus the New York Giants this Sunday.

In the past three years, Guidara and his team have sent

over about 70,000 pizzas to troops for the Super Bowl and

for the Fourth of July. “We put a lot of time and effort into

it. Every employee in this company gets so excited

about this. They have that sense of pride.“

That’s what I love about America. There’s always a silver lining to the bad things that happen.

There’s also the good.  Three Cheers for you UNOS and Frank Guidara! YOU ROCK!  Even if

Madonna didn’t rock all that much. After all, she IS in her mid 50s. I think she did a good job.

Superbowl Party Foods

Which team will win the Super Bowl on Sunday?  There are always some sports fans among my graders who know the score. They know the players and the teams. They even knew the team colors, can you believe that?  They all love Tom Brady. My kids think he’s going to be on the winning team.

Well, we shall see.   I have a fun little challenge for my classroom kids.  Those who predict the winner correctly will win a football sweatband for their wrist.  Those that predict incorrectly get to do 12 pushups.   And I have lost in years past. It wasn’t pretty watching me trying to do more than 12. So we keep it at 12 pushups.

Our class graph….looks like the Patriots might be the favorite!

This easy baked brie has dried cherries and pecans and jam inside. I shape it like a football and then cover it with puff pastry. The recipe for the Baked Brie is HERE.  At the Pepperidge Farm Website you can also watch a video on how to make the Baked Brie. It is to die for Yummy as a cracker dip!

I shaped my brie cheese like a football

I put the letters on with the extra puff pastry. I fill it with raspberry jam, some brown sugar, pecans and dried cherries. I wait to bake it till just before the Super Bowl starts.  Triscuits, Pretzel Ritz and Wheat Thins are good with it…..

Yummy baked brie with dried cranberries and pecans inside..

This yummy stuff is my black bean and corn and avocado salsa.  It’s a really fresh and kind of filling and really good!

This yummy black bean salsa is made from black eyed peas OR black beans, white sweet corn, green pepper,
avocado, tomato, cilantro and purple onion, with a few dashes of lime and Italian Salad Dressing and salt and pepper. It’s a crowd pleaser with Tostitos and these yummy pretzel crackers. and very filling! .

Touchdown TreatsHERE at the Family Fun website I found these cute cupcake football players I thought would be super cute to make for a Super Bowl Get together……M and Ms for the eyes and yellow buttons, black skinny licorice for the facemask.  Kids would LOVE these.

These cookies were from “On the Record Sports” and would be easy to make
from a chocolate cookie recipe….Only need a little icing in white!
Here at Luxe Finds was a cute way to do your 7 layer dip on the top….just make the guacamole
layer show on top and make lines from a piped bit of sour cream….then top with 2 colors of cherry tomatoes….so cute!
Now here’s my dipped strawberries…what if you added the white laces in white chocolate on
top…and removed the stems…wouldn’t they look like footballs? Yeah they would….yum…another idea….

sports cupcakes
Another bunch of cupcakes that even looked easier were these “football” shaped cupcakes….
or make them as sugar cookies topped with chocolate icing and the white lacing….EASY!

Those will be good Super Bowl Party foods, won’t they? They’ll go nicely with PIGS IN A BLANKET  and chicken wings FOR SURE!

HAPPY SUPER BOWL PARTYING!

Beachy Bedroom Redo

01/21/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

Beachy Bedroom Decor

Well, it is almost done.  I’m posting the pictures of the  basement bedroom today.  I just about have all the decor done.  We still want to change it from a windowed room to a patio glass door room, so we can easily get in and out to go to the jacuzzi in the winter.  As it is, it’s absolutely NO FUN walking down around the backyard hill in the FREAKING COLD SNOW!  (I actually thought about climbing through the window…..maybe I could get a ladder and ……uh…well….I’ll think about that one.)

We took out the mini blinds and the light fixtures and bought fresh new ones…..after painting everything ice blue…..

We ripped up the old, beige carpet, and put in new wood flooring….I didn’t take very many pics of it though……Oops!

Anyway here are the “BEFORE” pictures.  We had a water pipe freeze last winter so we had a little leaking in our walls and had to fix the pipes after the winter thaw.   The plumber tore out this HUGE piece of my wall!  And then just left it that way!  It was really gross! (nightmares of things crawling out of walls in the night….eek!)

Here is the work of my crazy plumber neighbor down the street!  But at least he found the leak!  Yucky!
My hubs did a great patch job…..see if you can find it in the  “after” pictures?
Finished “Mariner” themed room…..

Lots of Beach blue and white and shell and lighthouse decor……

Beach themed rooms are so easy because decorations are everywhere with the white and blue color scheme!

The blue and white “Star” quilt I purchased at a quilt shop…..

We repainted all the baseboards in the room too.  It looks really nice in there now.

You can’t even see it but behind this mirror is the repaired hole in the wall you can see in the first pic.

Here’s a good picture of the new wood flooring in the Mariner bedroom. And you can see the paint color contrast between the light ice blue and the marine blue walls.

My hubs did this wood flooring.  It is a vast improvement on the carpeting we had .

Anyway….after patching up all the walls with some wallboard and then plaster, (my hubs is quite the handyman stud!), we painted one wall a darker marine blue, and the other 3 walls and closet a pale ice blue.

Then I started looking for “MARINER” themed decorations all over the place.  They are easy to find.

Here’s the bookcase and the dark blue wall decor……I found lots of lighthouses……So pretty!

I got this really neato lighthouse decoration at Christmas time at Target.  It is one of those things that has color changing lights.  The top of the lighthouse actually works and spins and changes colors. It is the neatest thing ever if you see it at night!

I made this magnet board and my idea is to collect postcards from all the beaches I travel to…….
and attach them with these shell magnets I made with shells glued to circle magnets with hot glue.

I know this is a dumb picture in here….I gotta find something that fits…..But I love this sailboat frame…..

We got this light up dolphin night light to add some blue ambiance to the room at night….

One of my kids got this giant stuffed fish at a carnival I think….but it works in the room !

Lighthouse and sailboat tapestry…..I sent away for this too, from a catalog….It’s pretty in person….

I made a silk flower arrangement in blue and white in a “shell” designed, ceramic planter container.

I loved the lighthouse collection on these plates….can’t remember where I found them….but it looks good on a skinny wall to the side of the bed….

I got this “Beach House” frame at Bed, Bath and Beyond….I always find stuff there….

This is a Martha Stewart summer chair I got at Kmart for $45.00.  I love how wicker really goes well with a beach theme…..

My super tiny, lighthouse tea set that is maybe useful for Tinkerbell!  Way tiny that thing……I succumbed to some fancy advertising….I hate when that happens.

Here’s the table and chair and the new, white, faux wood mini blind….notice the light blue paint? So pretty!

The lamp I found at Pier 1 Imports for….get this…..ten bucks!  Yeah!  I love a deal!  I called all over to the surrounding cities at all the Pier 1 stores to find a match….but they were all gone.  It is really beautiful up close. The top has a sand dollar finial on it.   It’s really pretty.

I loved this beachy tray I found at Micheals….

This little lighthouse “tea set” I got from a catalog, thinking it would be, you know, a real little tea set, not one for Thumbelina!!  My husband laughed at it when it came in the mail in its tiny packaging. I guess I should look at the measurements of things in the future.

I have a collection of shells from living near the Pacific Ocean most of my life.  We spent every summer hanging out at the beach as a kid, a teenager, and as a young mother.  My kids love the beach. We have many happy memories spending time in Redondo, Torrance, Huntington and Seal Beaches.

So I guess the BEACH theme and all the shells and lighthouses have been a lot of fun for me. It brings back so many happy memories and times.  I’m a California beach girl at heart.

A set of shell pictures from T. J. Maxx  my favorite store!!!
Wall collage of beachy pictures….and a tiny, old crate I painted white and added shells and candles….
Just outside the window is the backyard patio and a jacuzzi…..our next project is to push out this window and make it
a glass doorway so we can get to our jacuzzi when it snows…..without freezing our little xxxx’s off!

Cute little nautical box I found at T.J. Maxx

My magnet board….I have 1 post card so far….Salt Lake…all my postcards will be from trips…that’s the goal….
Lighthouse decor is popular now too….I found lots of lighthouse pictures at
Bed, Bath and Beyond….and used a 20% off coupon too!
The Beachy Bedroom decor is a great guest room too!

Here’s the patio decor right outside the window….hope by next summer we will have the glass french door
put in replacing the window….it just will be so much easier than walking down in the snow (or climbing out through the window! We’ve actually done that on a particularly snowy day!

Hope you enjoyed my Mariner Room…. I sure love it….

Words of Comfort

01/16/2012 by Pattie 2 Comments

……the words of  comfort we share have meaning long after they are spoken……..

I don’t know why but lately I’ve been thinking about a terrible event in our family’s history. It was the day my son Danny died in a car accident coming home from school in the rain. He wasn’t speeding. He had a seatbelt on. It was a freak occurrence.  When these kinds of things happen to you….they change you forever. You are not the same person. Everybody who’s  been through the wretched pain of it will attest to how the wound gets partially healed, somewhat, with time.  You are kinda ruined in a way, though, and you just somehow put a bandaid on it and try to move ahead as a wounded soldier.

Remembrances or experiences reminding you of how special that person was to you, kind of rip off a portion of the bandaid you have hidden the wound under, and you are laid bare again….tears streaming down your face….no control in place.   But people along the road stop and help you. And you never forget it. You still appreciate everything. Even now I do. Life sucks sometimes, but it can be joyful still.

Maybe it’s because there’s a new 9 11 movie out with Tom Hanks that looks painfully sad. Maybe it’s because my kid’s friends are all coming home from their missions now and getting engaged, married, having a kid. It’s hard to be there to celebrate for them, somehow, although I am happy for them, and I do love them. It’s just hard. It rips the bandaid off for a minute. Stuff he will miss out on….stuff I’ll never see.  But people’s words still help me.  One of those returned missionaries gave me a few words of wisdom that helped me feel better today. It reminded me, years later now, of the people that said things to me and did simple, random, acts of kindness that I will never forget.

I think people fear they have to be grand in their gestures when they want to help in a tragedy. But the simple truth is….every single gesture helps….and is noted.  Words of comfort were so varied and mostly welcomed.  Lots of questions were not….still aren’t. Nobody wants to relive the details of the other-worldly pain. Lots of questions are not good and comforting. I guess I would figure that out. Some people don’t. Only 1 note hurt me. It mentioned one time he saw Danny perform something good. It made me think “you didn’t know him at all, did you?”  School and seminary teachers’ notes I reread occasionally, usually at Christmas as I keep them in my card file.  Such sweet teachers I’ll never forget.

Small, heartfelt gifts were so comforting to me.  One good friend named Pat gave me a small 5 x 5 book of lighthouses and poems on the light leading us home. I loved that probably more than any other gift. I kept it in my purse and grabbed it out like spinach for Popeye, making me feel strong when I was losing it. She had lost her husband the previous year. Another guy came and mowed our lawn for a month. He’d lost his wife a few years back.

Another one I remember was a small Christmas ornament given to me by a young girl, a very quiet girl, who came to my home all by herself. It was a statuary mother with a child in her arms.  I loved that figurine. I still do whenever I look at it.  One very good friend of mine came over late at night with her husband and 2 bags of groceries, and stayed listening to my husband after I went to bed exhausted.  Another friend came as soon as she heard, left work to be with me, ran in the house calling for me. Several couples came over, sat and talked. These comforting people were not all super close friends. They just cared. And they came and did what they could.  They all just said simply, “I’m so sorry”.

That helped me get through it, that others cared about our pain, and wanted to somehow make it better. It felt like a warm, hand knitted shawl, being wrapped around me.

Some came days later when I needed a friend to talk to. Several brought cross stitched and embroidered messages that I treasure.  One sent a picture book of the Savior, and another group send a large painting of the Savior. Another sent hymns of comfort in a cd. I had so many small gestures and gifts that I treasure.  Some sent sunflowers. Others sent roses. I remember most of the flowers and some of the plants. But there were so many.

One sent bread. I remember there were a lot of loaves of bread, but I only remember 1 person’s bread because she apologized saying “I didn’t know what to bring, so I brought some bread….I’m so sorry”. We had like 10 or 12 loaves in our freezer. I remember many casseroles which I did taste but never finished a serving of.  No appetite. You forget, even, to eat. You are damaged. But you don’t forget who sent you food. I remember even a bottle of horseradish sauce and roast beef sandwiches from my next door neighbor I didn’t know very well. She did what she could with 2 little girls in tow. Another neighbor did a floral arrangement of silks because I told her I needed a few for the table of pictures I was putting together. It was beautiful with all the fall colors, and sunflowers, one of my favorite flowers still.

Another was a neighbor that didn’t say much. She just took a few of my photo album pictures and made a scrapbook of Danny. Her name was Holly. It was such a dear act.  When others heard about it they came over and took 3 or 4 more pictures from our pile laying out on the living room floor in a 3 x 3 foot grid for days, and they made up a page for the Danny scrapbook. It was finished to overflowing.

So many kids did such comforting things….coming to visit…..singing at the funeral…..leading the singing….carrying the casket… Organizing a Festival of Trees Tree at Christmas a few months later..sitting in groups at the funeral……Alta High hockey kids united together…..that was all so comforting to me. Their coach who had Danny’s number 44 embroidered on everybody’s team jersey. The coach died suddenly the next year. We sent a heartfelt note to his widow with money for the funeral expenses. I loved that coach. Danny loved him too. I’m sure Danny and he did a fist bump when they met in heaven.

A dear neighbor named Laurie, her son was one of Danny’s best friends, framed Dan’s hockey shirt with his number 44 in a big, black frame. Maybe that’s why I was weepy. I found the shirt yesterday when cleaning.  it’s been stored.  We set it up next to his casket at the funeral. Another one of his best friend’s family anonymously paid for the funeral plot. His home teaching companion and our home teachers each sent huge amounts of money to virtually pay half of his funeral expenses.  Like I said, people do what they can….it’s all good….it’s all appreciated…it helps to  bear one another’s burdens.

I loved the service my kids gave to their brother. My kids and their spouses put together a powerpoint of pictures of Dan to music for a display at the funeral. I still can’t listen to the song without being sad. Associations to music are strong.  My son played an original piano solo, another son spoke about his brother playing video games with him, using the “healer” role playing, wishing he could have “healed” his brother like they did in the video game together.  And my daughter who had to travel far to come, prayed at his funeral. And did many things to support me.  It was all meaningful to me. They had always said Danny was my favorite kid. For years I heard that. I don’t know if that is true, but he was very special to me, being my youngest, my baby. It all comforted me.  It was all given in love.

I think I have forgotten that when others are in pain, it’s so important not to think about it…not to worry that you have nothing to say or to add. Or that you don’t know what to do. Just go and do…..whatever you can….It’s like the Little Drummer Boy. Just play your drum if that’s all you can think of to do.  It will make it better…. It is all helpful. It is all memorable and loving and comforting.  I know.  And I’m grateful years later for sweet, comforting gestures of love and charity.  Even now, I think back when I’m sad, and it comforts me still.

Giant Paper Snowflakes

01/14/2012 by Pattie Leave a Comment

The other day at school I saw this giant snowflake made out of paper that one of the teachers had made. It was so beautiful! I got on google last night and looked it up.  And look what I found!  This is the coolest, easiest snowflake to make ever. And so I am making these next week. They are Easy.
A Tutorial is HERE at Paper Zone Blog for how to do a cool, giant paper snowflake.  I used 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper sheets and had each student do 1/6 of the snowflake. Another one with cool photos is HERE at A Cup of Calm.

A Cup of Calm had cool pics to guide me through it!

You start by using a perfect square of paper, just like in Japanese paper folding, or doing a square snowflake. Then you fold twice.  The side where there is a single fold you cut 4 lines almost to the edge, that line up with the side with the long side of the triangle.

Fold the square diagonally to form a triange. Then fold that triangle in half again to form a smaller triangle. Unfold carefully. Attach the 2 outside tips of the square to each other in front. Then attach the next tips in back with tape. Then the next tips in front with tape. That the last inner tips in back with tape.  Do this 4 or 5 more times.  Attach the ends together with a stapler. You will have a 5 sectioned star snowflake or a 6 sectioned snowflake.  hang up in the center of your room for quite a breathtaking display.

Just staple all the 6 parts together to form the snowflake!  All Done!

A fun interactive snowflake making website with magic scissors that cut a new snowflake every time is called Snowflake Barkleys.com HERE is the link. It’s a cool and fun website for the kids to get an idea how to cut a snowflake.
Here are some funny winter riddles to brighten up this dreary gray weather we are having. Ugh! I have to search for things to give me strength during the coldest month of the year in Utah.

Winter Riddles to give you the giggles!

Q. What did the big furry hat say to the warm wooly scarf?
A. You hang around while I go on ahead.

Q. How do you keep from getting cold feet?
A. Don’t go around BRRRfooted!

Q. Where do seals go to see movies?
A. The dive in!

Q. What kinds of math of Snowy Owls like?
A. Owlgebra.

Q. Why is the slippery ice like music?
A. If you don’t C Sharp, you’ll B flat.

I’m still lamenting I moved away from sunny California when it comes to the weather!  Now I’m off to organize my office drawers……yeah…..I know…..what a fun Saturday plan, right?  :O
